If you have ever wondered about the Coalfields, go to the Waikato Coalfields Museum, which has exhibitions of the coal mining in the Waikato. It allows you to take a look into the lives of the coal miners and explore coal mining through the ages, with collections of mining machinery, personal items of the miners and photographs. This is all set in a historic homestead which is within a reserve. For those who wish to delve deeper, there are coal mining archives, a library, a family history database and history files.

Huntly is Waikato’s biggest source of coal, producing over 10 000 tonnes per day.

The Hakarimata Walkway is an area of Native Bush, including 600 to 800 year old Kauri Trees, which is rare in the Waikato. There are also native birds, streams, waterfalls and much more.
