Otaki
Catch a bus to Otaki with nakedbus. Otaki is the gateway to the Kapiti Coast and is the first country town north of Wellington.
Otaki beach is natural and unspoiled, it is backed by sand dunes and offers great surfing and fishing spots. The beach is safe for swimming and is patrolled in summer.
Inland from Otaki town is the Otaki Forks, this is the main entrance to the Tararua Ranges from the West. There are great spots for picnics, river swimming areas and bushwalks, which range from 30 minutes to 3.5 hours. It is also a good access point for the longer tramps which leads right into the ranges. These lead you through the remnants of the abandoned logging and farming sites.
On the Otaki River there is plenty to do, with kayaking and rafting adventures for everyone. The Tararua Recreation Centre offers plenty of activities, such as abseiling waterfalls, climbing, canyoning and mountain biking.
Otaki has a very strong Maori history as the Ngati Toa chief Te Ruaparaha was associated with this area in the mid 1800s. There are still several marae in the town.
The town has a very important part to its economy and that is the market gardening, which sells fresh local produce. There are weekend markets also with local arts and crafts.
The town is known for its warm climate, beautiful gardens and excellent cafes and shopping with friendly locals which attract plenty of visitors.
