Waiouru is the place to be for anything to do with the Army. The base for the New Zealand Army is at Waiouru. The QEII Army memorial Museum has displays of army life and equipment. The Waiouru Army Museum has displays depicting campaigns used by the New Zealand Army and some of the work that has been done during peace time. There are guided tours available of this museum and a theatre with historical footage.

Waiouru is really close to Mount Ruapehu, making it a good place to base yourself when you go skiing or snowboarding. Also making all the outdoor activities at Tongariro National Park available just around the corner. Tongariro National Park is a Dual World Heritage area and is great for tramping and mountain-biking in the summer. It has three active volcanoes, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. During the winter the Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields are great places to be for the skiing in New Zealand.
