Whakatane

White Island, which is New Zealand’s only marine volcano, is only 50km from the shore of Whakatane. The island is a reserve and bird sanctuary, which you can visit and have a tour of the island, which has a circumference of 6km. At the island you can see sulphur holes and geysers and remains of the sulphur mine, which was destroyed in the 1914 eruption.

In one of the best fishing spots in the country, you can’t miss out on the game fishing in this area. There are fishing and diving charters offered by many different operators. There is a personalised trout tour guide, Back Country Fishing, with vast fishing experience and local knowledge. You could also have an experience swimming with the dolphins with Dolphins Down Under, who also offer scuba diving and snorkel tours.

The Whakatane Museum and Gallery has displays of the Eastern Bay of Plenty’s early history and environment, including White Island. There is also a collection of books, photographs and archives.

There are a wide range of walks available in Whakatane, including a town walk which takes approximately 2.5hours, where you will see Muriwai’s Cave and the Puketapu Lookout. There are also bushwalks, going through the different areas, some of these are the Ohope bushwalk and the White Pine bushwalk.
